Sunny Shanghai Sunday. Spring is in the air. A collection of Mao jackets – not the traditional ones, but revitalized creative pieces that would make Mao blush. A photographer, a designer, a stylist and a lucky model who happened to be Klara. Six hours photo session in a scabby creative area. Here are the resulting pictures.
Starting point for the clothing series was eight traditional Mao jackets bought in a government store in Beijing by our good friend Sofie Dieu, fashion designer and creator of items of happiness. The Mao jacket is the upper part of the traditional Mao suit named after you-know-who. Sofie’s challenge was to turn the jackets into objects of fashion; colorful and synonymous with a happy bright future. For a funkier appearance, she decided to skip the strict pants and pair the jackets with colorful tights.
The eight lucky jackets present a variation of handicraft designs: from hand made embroideries to feathers, pearls, wool felt, ribbons and pompons. As for everything in China – it can never be too much! Get your own piece of Chinese springtime happiness now – the jackets will be on sale on Etsy beginning of April 2009.
